California Academy of Sciences Project Lab

In April 2009 Visionary Digital had the pleasure if installing a BK imaging system at the California Academy of Sciences for Robert Drewes.

Before we get into that, I must say that the Cal Academy goes far beyond a state of the art research facility. Please visit the California Academy of Sciences in order to understand the scope of this amazing place.

The Project Lab is a glass enclosed facility where the scientists and equipment are viewed by the public walking through the exhibits. Researchers from various disciplines as Herpetology, Entomology, Paleontology, Geology, Ichthyology and Botany are a few of the departments that use this lab.

This BK system is specifically designed for high resolution macro photography. Please see the gallery for some examples of the images taken in the Project Lab.

The Set Up
This is how the system looks assembled and ready for use. The lab is spacious, well lit and very comfortable to work in.

Lauren Scheinberg and Observers
Lauren is a technical assistant who works with Robert Drewes in Herpetology. She jumped right in and had had a good feel for things from the start. Now she trains others to use the system.

Roy Explaining the Basics
Here the staff gets the basic training on the system. This image shows the glass walls of the lab which allows visitors to observe the Project Lab procedures.

Getting Started
Hands-on training proved to be a very successful process from the start for the bright staff at the Academy. They all caught on very quickly and were able to produce excellent images in a matter of minutes.

Vic Smith & Lauren Scheinberg
Lauren introduced Vic to the system. Within minutes he was producing composite images of a fly.

The experience at the Academy was a pleasure. We had the opportunity to work with wonderful people and an exceptional array of diverse material. The BK system has demonstrated its capability to successfully image a broad range specimens far beyond anyone’s expectations.

We would like to express our gratitude to Robert Drewes and all the participants at the California Academy of Sciences for their energy and special attention given to this installation and training. Robert not only helped to make our work easy, he went the extra mile to make it a pure pleasure.
