Research Interests

My core research interests are systematics, phylogenetics, evolution, and biogeography, particularly of the invertebrates and especially arthropods. I began my systematic research on marine isopod crustaceans and I am still extremely interested in marine invertebrates. However, my research focus has shifted to the terrestrial realm and my current research projects are focused on beetles, particularly those classified in the carabid beetle subfamily Paussinae. This group contains 750 described species that are distributed in all tropical regions of the world. These beetles are commonly known as bombardiers, due to their ability to explosively discharge defensive chemicals at temperatures up to 100°C! Most species are obligate symbionts with ants - a lifestyle that has led to an astounding array of morphological diversity within this group, especially within the tribe Paussini, which are commonly known as "Flanged Bombardier Beetles"
Setting Up The System - Feb 28th, 2011.

Visionary Digital found working with Wendy, James and the group an absolute pleasure. Wendy had a great room set aside for the system and in a couple of hours we were set up and running.

Wendy was able to get comfortable quickly as we shot together for the first day and on the second day she shot this Paussus solidus, which made her a happy shooter.

Her subjects are colorful and loaded with exquisite texture and intricate structures.

She chose a system that was custom configured and aimed at her beetles. The system also gives her the ability to share HD video with colleagues at ASU and Northern Arizona University. (Video call) Here she is talking and sharing her images live with Shapard Wolf at ASU in Phoenix.

We are looking forward to an ongoing relationship with Wendy and her colleagues and hope to further the development of new standards for high-resolution micro and macro photography and image communications in the fields of systematics and taxonomy.
